I’m Gerard West, I’m thirty years old and I’m from Liverpool, UK. After being diagnosed with a range of long standing mental illnesses, I discovered climbing when I accompanied friends to a local bouldering centre, the Climbing Hangar. That was almost five years ago and I’ve never looked back! Climbing is a very therapeutic activity which helps to calm my mental health issues when they become difficult to manage. Because of the benefits I have seen, I try as much as possible to advocate and spread awareness of mental illness to help reduce the stigma and mystery around it.
My usual outdoor haunts are around North Wales, the Peak District and Liverpool’s own local sandstone quarries (when summer comes), Currently I climb around 6c across lead and bouldering but with winter here, it’s time to train hard and push grades. My goal for 2018 is to lead 7a and to boulder V7/V8.
